More than 80 percent of Burmese refugees in Thailand are ethnic Karen. Especially In northern Thailand there are small Karen villages where those, whom have lived there for many years, fear that their homes and land will be taken away from them by Thai authorities. Lack of, what Thai police will consider, proper documentation, allows Thai officials to take advantage of land that they are now finding to be beneficial to their economies. Many in these Karen villages, occupied by generations with homes built by hand, fear that any moment their homes will be taken from them. #throwbackthursday - Melanie with friends Maya, Mai, and Loki. When she first began working internationally, Melanie began in southeast Asia working with an NGO in Mae Wang, Thailand. In this organization women were given an opportunity for a safer life with greater independent opportunities. Burmese refugee women are not only socially marginalized in Thailand but also substantially at risk, and often victims, of labor and sex trafficking among other human rights violations. What keeps me going is knowing that each action, no matter how seemingly small it may be, has the power to make someone's life that much better. We know that asylum seekers so often go through unspeakable circumstances due to no fault of their own. One cannot escape the fact that time and place have favored me while others scramble for their lives.
